Past ProjectsThe
Photographic archive. Two of our members, Peter Adderley
and
Robert McClure, have been active in the last couple of years
photographing all areas of the region. This photographic record may
then be used as
a reference point into the future, when it can be used to view the
"then" and "now", providing a snapshot of the area in 2005/6, somewhat
equivalent to taking a walk down every street.. It will present a
streetscape,without targeting any individual houses.
Mosquitoes
and microbat boxes Recently a group of local residents
raised the issue of a perceived increase in mosquito numbers and
potential disease distribution. There was a widespread call for mass
spraying of the local breeding areas. The KWT took the position that
it was a very complex issue and that mass spraying of the local salt
marshes had major environmental implications. It was suggested that
more use should be made of microbats, one of the major natural
predators of mosquitoes. This could be helped by providing rousting
broxes. The decision made by Gosford City Council may be found in our Newsletter of January 2007.
You can download
a document called "Living With Mosquitoes in the Lower Hunter and
Mid-North Coast Region of NSW? from Hunter/New England Health
website.
Dogs
on Killcare/Putty Beach
Dogs exercising on the Killcare/Putty
surf beach has been some cause for concern. The Gosford City Council
designated "Leash-free areas" have been frequently ignored and the
signs provided vandalised. NO dogs should be in front of the surf club
and main car park. More details can be obtained from Gosford
City Council website. Liberty Service station A Liberty Service
station sits at main gateway to the Killcare Wagstaffe area. This major
development is an example of the inadequacy of the system where the
checking and passing of developments has passed from Gosford City
Council to private consultants. The KWT has major concerns re the
completion of the re-vegetation of this site. Marie Byles Lookout The major
roadside lookout in the area, name after Marie Byles, has been
vandalised and degraded over the past few years. The KWT has been in
negotiation with Gosford City Council and the National Parks and
Wildlife Service re a restructuring of this very popular site. Strom
residence and archive
Allen and Beryl Strom were a most
significant couple in the impact they had on environmental issues and
local government in the Gosford area, and particularly in Killcare
Wagstaffe and Bouddi National Park. Allen died in 1997 and Beryl in
2002 and their legacy continues. Their property on the Scenic Rd
has been entrusted to the NPWS and the garage and cottage are being
developed as a study and resource centre. Sorting through their massive
collection of documents and memorabilia was a huge task. KWT members
Jill Baxter and Beverley Runcie did the bulk of the job and must be
commended by all. Sand
to
Sea display During Easter 2005, the KWT presented a two
week set of displays, talks, walks and activities called "Sand to
Sea ". The two page program is available here, pages ONE and TWO.
